Glossary > AS9100D
AS9100D is the internationally recognized quality management standard for the aerospace and defense industries. It is fully based on ISO 9001 and supplements it with industry-specific requirements for risk management, configuration control, counterfeit protection for components, and first-article inspection – requirements that take into account the particular safety-critical nature and long life cycles of aerospace and defense systems.
Publisher: International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG)
Current edition: AS9100 Rev. D
The standard is intended for manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers throughout the entire aerospace and defense supply chain – from engine manufacturers to suppliers of individual components to maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) companies. Nearly all major OEMs in the industry, such as Airbus and Boeing, as well as many defense contractors, require valid AS9100D certification as a prerequisite for supplier approval.
ISO 9001 Basis: full adoption of general quality management requirements
Configuration control: comprehensive documentation of component revisions over long product lifecycles
Risk management: systematic assessment of process and product risks across the entire value chain
First Article Inspection (FAI): comprehensive first-article inspection in accordance with AS9102 for every new configuration
Counterfeit protection: measures to prevent the use of counterfeit or non-traceable components
Special approval processes: defined procedures for deviations from drawings or specifications
AS9100D is the cross-industry quality standard for the civil and military aerospace sectors as well as the defense industry as a whole, and is issued by accredited certification bodies. AQAP 2110, on the other hand, is specifically tailored to defense equipment, with a particular focus on NATO procurement processes and failure management (FRACAS), and is assessed by government quality assurance agencies such as the BAAINBw rather than through traditional third-party certification. The content of both standards overlaps significantly, which is why many defense suppliers with an aviation focus are certified to both standards simultaneously.
Without valid AS9100D certification, most aerospace OEMs will refuse to approve a supplier, which results in an immediate loss of business. Since certifications are viewable EU-wide in the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG)’s OASIS database, the revocation of a certificate is also visible industry-wide and can jeopardize existing customer relationships across the entire supply chain.
No, but it is contractually required by nearly all major OEMs as a prerequisite for becoming a supplier.
AS9100D fully incorporates ISO 9001 and supplements it with requirements for configuration control, risk management, counterfeit prevention, and first-article inspection.
AS9100D is the cross-industry standard for aerospace and defense, while AQAP 2110 is specifically for defense equipment and NATO procurement.
Typically three years, with annual surveillance audits and registration in the IAQG's OASIS database.
The greatest effort is required for first-article inspection and ensuring complete configuration traceability over decades. Connected worker platforms such as weasl link FAI test plans directly to connected test equipment, document every configuration revision in an audit-proof manner, and provide acceptance reports.
