Definition: What is IATF 16949?

IATF 16949 is an international quality management standard for the automotive industry. It is based on ISO 9001 and defines additional, industry-specific requirements for defect prevention, process control, and traceability in automotive mass production and for related replacement parts. The standard is published by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and is mandated by nearly all OEMs as a prerequisite for supplier approval.

Current edition: IATF 16949:2016

Who is IATF 16949 intended for?

The standard is intended for organizations that manufacture production parts, replacement parts, or accessories for the automotive industry – that is, automotive manufacturers (OEMs) themselves as well as their suppliers at all levels (Tier 1 through Tier 3). Purely development-focused service providers without their own series production are generally not covered by the scope of the standard.

Overview of core requirements

  • Zero-defect strategy: systematic error prevention instead of post-production error checking

  • FMEA: Failure Mode and Effects Analysis for products and processes

  • Control plan: documented production control plan for each component

  • Traceability: seamless assignment of batch, serial, and part numbers

  • Statistical Process Control (SPC): verification of stable and capable processes

  • Continuous Improvement Process (CIP): structured root cause analysis, e.g., via 8D reports

  • Start-up management: standardized processes for production start-ups and change approvals

Difference from ISO 9001

ISO 9001 provides the basic framework for IATF 16949 and is applicable across all industries. IATF 16949 fully adopts this structure but supplements it with additional automotive-specific requirements, such as those related to FMEA, control plans, customer-specific requirements (CSR) of individual OEMs, and a significantly more rigorous audit process.

Consequences of noncompliance

Without valid IATF 16949 certification, most OEMs will refuse to approve a supplier. The direct consequence is the loss of an order. Even with existing certifications, nonconformities identified during OEM audits or VDA 6.3 process audits lead to corrective actions; repeated occurrences result in the revocation of certification and, consequently, the loss of supplier authorization.

Related standards

  • ISO 9001 – basic quality management standard

  • VDA 6.3 – process audit standard of the German automotive industry association

  • VDA 6.5 – product audit in the automotive industry

  • EN 10204 – material certificates and material documentation

Frequently asked questions about IATF 16949

Is IATF 16949 required by law?

No. This is a contractual requirement imposed by the OEMs, not a legal obligation.

What is the difference between IATF 16949 and ISO 9001?

IATF 16949 builds upon ISO 9001 and supplements it with automotive-specific requirements such as FMEA, control plans, and a zero-defect strategy.

How long is a certification valid?

Typically three years, with annual surveillance audits and recertification prior to expiration.

Who is authorized to certify?

Only certification bodies accredited and authorized by the IATF.

Successfully implementing IATF 16949

The biggest operational challenge rarely lies in the standard itself, but rather in maintaining complete documentation: traceability, test records, and control plans must be ready for audit at any time. Connected worker platforms like weasl automate this documentation directly during the work process, thereby significantly reducing the effort required to prepare for audits.
