Over 1 year of training, difficult traceability, cost-intensive rework: Confovis meets these challenges with our connected worker platform weasl - with lasting success.

Confovis, based in Jena, Thuringia, specializes in the development and manufacture of systems for automated optical inspection (AOI) and optical 3D surface metrology. Since 2009, the company has been offering customer-oriented, application-specific solutions for the fields of photonics, MEMS, 3DIC and advanced packaging. The WAFERinspect series is characterized by an innovative approach with the patented SIM measurement method for high-precision, non-contact 3D measurements without moving optical components. In the same beam path, the system enables image-based defect inspection with different light frequencies. This offers exceptional flexibility, stability, repeatability and accuracy in defect detection, classification and dimensional measurement.
Confovis, an innovative manufacturer of optical 3D measurement and inspection systems for the semiconductor industry, was facing a major challenge: the paper-based documentation of the complex parameterization regularly led to traceability problems and cost-intensive rework. Up to 600 work steps and more than 1,000 parameters are required to complete a measuring device - a complex process in which errors in production can quickly lead to serious consequences.
It became increasingly difficult to train new employees in the assembly processes, as the knowledge transfer from the experienced employees took place on paper and sometimes with verbal additions. On average, it took longer than a year to train a new employee. The required information was decentralized and the collection and provision of relevant information was error-prone and time-consuming.
A digital connected worker platform was essential for Confovis. After an extensive test phase, Confovis therefore opted for the weasl, which impressed with its high level of flexibility, range of functions and the competent support provided by the weasl team. Confovis pursued four main objectives with the introduction of weasl:
![]()
Reduction in training times and error rates
![]()
Digital support for employees with clear step-by-step instructions in verbal and visual communication
![]()
Process and audit-proof documentation of the work steps
![]()
Fast, uncomplicated versioning of work instructions
Meeting these targets should ensure that errors are avoided, quality standards are met and processes are made more efficient overall.
With the introduction of weasl, Confovis has not only overcome short-term challenges, but also created long-term, strategic advantages. Thanks to weasl, the company saves time and money, increases employee productivity and ensures that every measuring device is delivered in high quality. Confovis is planning further optimizations in the future: The next step is to connect weasl to the ERP system in order to import parts lists more quickly and automatically assign work instructions, for example.
